As of July 2026, BMW Group requires a wireless electronic steering wheel level as part of the wheel alignment process, under bulletin SI 03 01 26 (270). It's already in effect across every BMW-approved alignment system. Here's what's involved and what to check.

What's changed
Steering wheel level is separate from the usual camber, caster and toe checks. It's whether the wheel sits dead centre when the wheels are pointing straight ahead, and BMW now wants it measured and recorded rather than corrected by eye, since the steering angle sensor also feeds driver assistance systems on newer models. The alignment result needs a sensor reading, factored in and documented on the printout.

The hardware
A small wireless sensor clips onto the wheel and reads its angle during alignment, sending the reading to your software over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth so it's recorded automatically on the printout. Which unit you need depends on your system.

The software and PC
The sensor only works if your software can read it, so BMW's requirement is really two things bundled together: the hardware, and a software update to use it. That update usually means a new licence key and an engineer visit rather than something you can install remotely.
The July 2027 date matters: after that, new BMW target data will only be released for software that's already been updated. Miss it, and you won't be able to align new BMW models at all, not just the steering wheel level.
Some PCs can't run the updated software either. Older Hunter HW1 PCs and Beissbarth PCs still on Windows 7 will need replacing too, so it's worth checking now.
