The DVSA has announced updates to how electronic parking brakes must be tested during MOTs. This affects certain roller brake testers and requires new software — or in some cases, hardware — to stay compliant.
If you're currently operating an RBT brake tester from Everard, it's important to check whether your machine is eligible for a software or hardware upgrade. The DVSA has made it clear: certain vehicles can only be tested on APB-approved brake testers.
We're actively supporting our customers through this transition. Whether your machine only needs a software update or requires full Special Drive hardware, we're here to help you meet compliance — without unnecessary disruption to your business.
Below you’ll find a breakdown of eligible machines, upgrade options, and associated costs.
If you would like your machine to meet the latest APB testing standards, the following models are eligible for a software update. Each machine will also receive a new EIN number (ending in “APB”) and an updated serial plaque to certify compliance.
Planned Update During Calibration
The software update will be applied during your next scheduled calibration visit for a one-time fee of £675, with no further action needed.
Optional Early Upgrade
If you’d prefer the upgrade sooner, we can schedule a separate visit for £675 (plus callout charge) to cover both the software update and post-upgrade testing.
To comply with the latest DVSA APB testing standards, the following machines require a hardware upgrade, which involves adding Special Drive technology (including the full software update) to the brake tester:

The DVSA have confirmed the Porsche 911 (992) from late 2021 can only be tested on a APB-approved roller brake tester, due to a single parking brake actuator fitted only to the nearside rear.
